My Art

I always feel a bit pretentious talking about "my art." I sort of embrace the inverse statements "I don't know anything about art but I know what I like" and "I know everything about art, but I don't know what I like."

I am adverse to what I call "The Emperor's new clothes" art. For example, the last time I was in the Chicago Contemperary Art Museum, there was a white canvas hung on the wall. That was it, a white canvas. I don't remember the "artist's" name, and I really don't care. The piece was not art. But someone convinced someone it was. Too bad for all of us.

On the other hand, the same museum, the same day, had a fabulous piece that used about eight 50 gallon oil drums filled with water, and rear projected some durotrans so they reflected off the surface of the water in the drums. The photos showed people in third world countries using the drums for fire, for water storage, for cleaning clothes etc. It's a piece of art that will stay in my mind forever.

My "art" is here in the form of photography, poetry, and a play. Judge for yourself if the Emperor is clothed, or not.

PoemsPoems

I recently read some poems in a prestigious literary magazine. It seemed to me that the poet made line breaks that only served to make the poems difficult to read. I believe there is a place for cleverness, and a place for straightforwardness. (Is that a word?)

My poems are not so much poems in the traditional sense, but rather "thought pods" on things personal, things fantastical, things social, and on and on.

I have no illusions that these will be read by more than ten people. But here they are. If you read some of them, let me know. Constructive criticism welcome. Destructive critcism despised.

When the site goes live, I will only have a small number of my poems presented. Through the following days, more will be added. I thank the people at NetCrafters for developing a software that allows me to make easy changes in copy and graphics, whenever the mood, or the muse, or the moody muse strikes.

If the photos in my galleries don't speak for themselves, then they don't belong there. If you look at them, and want to discuss them, contact me.

Plays and suchPlays and such
Plays

In December, 2006, I had the distinct pleasure of having my full-length play "Anna" read at the Aronoff Center for the Performing Arts in Cincinnati. As is true of any first endeavor, it was OK, but not perfect. Click here for a PDF of the play, so you can judge for yourself, if you choose. But what a grand night it was, with friends reading, friends attending, and goodwill the byword of the evening.

I will also share some thoughts about my forays into community theater. The good, the bad and the ugly. Come on a long and listen to...We'll have some fun.

MusingsMusings

The musings section of this site is sort of an "amended blogging page." I will be adding to it frequently. All entries will be dated, and I invite comments.
